It’s difficult to really understand the Brazilian startup scene without attending the events and meeting the people.  São Paulo is the centre for startups in Brazil and the biggest meetups are found there.  In order to meet and build relationships in the local startup scene, I recommend you attend the following startup meetups in São Paulo:

BR New Tech; meetups every couple of months organized by Bedy Yang of Brazil Innovators and 500 Startups. If you can only attend one event, this isn’t a bad choice.

Ideias na Laje; last Wednesday of every month at Rua Augusta.

StartupSampa; yet not yet started but intends to meetup every two months as they do in Rio de Janeiro and Minas.

DojoSP; a programming event held once a month for coding talent to unite and trade tips.  This is a great place to meet young programming talent.

In terms of annual events, notable ones include:

Campus party; a week-long series of tech events, attracting entrepreneurs and VCs the world over.

Startup weekend; a weekend-long startup incubation event that happens once or twice a year.

Startupi has an excellent and complete list of events in the startup community.  I also recommend Startup Digest’s monthly Brazil newsletter which summarizes the top startup event of the month.

I talk about the startup meetups in Rio de Janeiro here.
